
Person of Indian Origin Card (PIO Card)
Government of India has introduced the new PIO Card Scheme in 2002 and it is in effect from 15th September, 2002. Persons who are holding a passport of any other country expect the countries listed below:
Afghanistan, Bhutan, Bangladesh, China, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka or any other country specified by Government of India are eligible for applying for a PIO Card.
Note: Under the new rule Iran Nationals can also be granted PIO Card after they get an approval of Ministry of Home Affairs.

Who is eligible to obtain a “Person of Indian Origin Card” (PIO Card)
- Any person who have held an Indian Passport any time before.
- The persons applying themselves or their parents or grand parents were born in India or they were a permanent resident of India.
Note the above condition is only applicable provided all of the above mentioned persons were not citizens of any other country at that given time. - The person applying is married to an Indian Citizen
OR
A person of Indian origin covered under the conditions given in Column
1 and 2 above.Note: Under the new rule Iran Nationals can also be granted PIO Card after they get an approval of Ministry of Home Affairs.
What are Fees for Applying for a PIO Card (Person of Indian Origin)
- For Adults the Fees is Rs. 15000/- (Adults being 18 yrs and above)
- For minors the Fees is Rs. 7500/- (Minors being below 18 yrs of age)
Validity of "Person of Indian Origin Card" (PIO Card)

- Along with the application form the Candidate should provide a documentary proof of evidence of being a person of Indian origin.
